Porirua Youth Awards

WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Young people who are outstanding and excellent in both attainment and attitude

ABOUT THE AWARD

The purpose of the Porirua Youth Awards is to reward young people who are excelling.  Awards are given in art and culture, education, environment or community work, and sport.   Different from most awards – the Porirua Youth Awards recognises youth in two age categories, these being, junior 12-15 years, intermediate 16-19 years.

This initiative was created in response to numerous inquiries and requests for attention and support to be given to young people of Porirua who are achieving in school, on the sport field, on the stage, and in the community. The Porirua Youth Awards provides a medium by which Porirua City acknowledges our youth who are leading the way. The Honourable Hekia Parata, MP has championed raising funds for Porirua Youth Awards with over $35,000 being raised in 2010 through the parliamentary games, a celebrity debate and fundraising auction and generous donations.  Key support has come from Telecom, New Zealand Post and the Porirua City Council.

November 2010 saw the inaugural presentation of the Porirua Youth Awards. Nine of the finest young people of Porirua were presented certificates and awards by Ms. Parata and Prime Minister John Key. Ms. Parata is working with Partners Porirua and the Porirua Foundation who will support with the coordination and long term sustainability of the awards fund.

2011 PORIRUA YOUTH AWARDS CITATIONS

"I was lucky enough to be part of the judging panel for this year's Porirua Youth Awards, which was a great experience. The applicants were absolutely amazing, which made the level of competition really high. This made the job of choosing the winners far from easy, but was great to see the number of hardworking, talented young people there are in the Porirua region. By sitting on the judging panel  I was impressed that the applicants were not only outstanding in their specific forte, but were multi-talented all rounders. These people truly deserve to be acknowledged and the Porirua Youth Awards were a great way to give the recipients the recognition they deserve." - Akane Sandom of Porirua City Council - Youth Advisory Group

" The Porirua Youth Awards are a great way to acknowledge the amazing things that young people in our city are achieving . It is especially great to celebrate their talents in a broader setting than just sports or school. As a young city it is so important that we foster the talent we have here in Porirua and continue to encourage excellence. In MC-ing the event this year it was a huge honour to share the stage with young poeple who have and will continue to succeed at the highest levels." - Cr Bronwyn Kropp of Porirua City Council
